The Yamaha XS650 Vertical twin motorcycle was sold here in the States from 1970 to 1983. It is one of the most popular classic Jap bikes ever produced, and today has a big following of collectors and chopper fans alike. There are many clubs and organizations dedicated to the old XS650 which came in two styles, the Standard model with it's 18 inch back wheel and 19 inch front, and the Special series with the wide 16 inch back wheel and 19 inch front. Both styles have the rugged 653 cc vertical twin engine that was advertised as 53 h/p. The old saying of "if it has gas and oil in it, it will run" is pretty much true in the case of the old XS650s. The XS650 pulls like a freight train from idle all the way to it's modest red line of about 7,200 rpm. The best part of this old bike is that the average person can work on it in his own garage, they are simple to maintain, and there are tons of aftermarket parts available today.

Here's my 1977D XS650. Not much to look at, but she runs great. I've been working on it through the winter, modifying the swing arm bushings & pivot shaft, new tires, sealing the tank, steering head bearings and so on. I bought some hard bags for it from eBay so I can get rid of that monstrous trunk. Hope to get it back on the road this summer.

Not much to look at ?? Dang !! I think it's a beautiful bike Nick. The old 77D is looking better every day. And was I lying about the old XS650's being reliable ? If an XS650 has gas and oil, it most likely will run.
