An in line four cylinder engine, Indian had it before the Japanese.

Actually Henderson and ACE had the four cylinder first, which where bought-out by Indian in the 1930's. Indian continued production of the Four until World War II, when they retooled their assembly lines for Army motorcycles, primarily 45 cubic inch V-twin Scouts. The Four never made a comeback after the war and Indian's fortunes went downwards as well right up to their demise in the 1950's.
