These days when you buy something new or a low mileage used vehicle, very often the dealer or an aftermarket firm will offer you an extended warranty. How valuable is the extended warranty and is it worth the money ? The 1 year extended warranty for a Yamaha motorcycle can run as high as $420.00 per year. For a late model car it can run well over $2,000.00.
Any thoughts ?

I've never bought an extended warranty. I can only think of one time I would have used one in over 30 years of buying stuff. That includes cars, bikes, electronic equipment and appliance's.

I didn't buy the extended warrant for my VStar... but I am considering buying one for my car... fortunately I can get a really good price for it but I'm still not sure if I'll buy it... I'm torn...

EW's are Huge moneymakers for the sellers, that's why everyone from Sears to Big Lots pushes them with purchases. The general Quality level of Cars and Bikes (especially Japanese) is so high now that I can'y imagine the EW being worth the cost. But then again a Toyota Remanufactured Automatic transmission is well over $2000.

I think they are a great idea, but over here we get 2 years on a new bike?
I guess if you can afford to change your bike every 2 years whats the point? But on older bikes I think, if you are operating on a limited budget, they are a Godsend!

We bought the 7-year warranty for the Ultra. For $1200 I felt that it was worth it due to the amount of long distance traveling that we do on the bike. If we are 1000 miles from home and the engine blows up while pulling the trailer, everything is covered.

7 years is a long time. Yamaha max warranty is 48 months. However, my bike turned 48 month's old last month and so far have had nothing go wrong other then worn tires, brakes and oil.
I probably don't ride as much as many however. Only 16,000 on the bike.

Any research I have ever seen about extended warrantees (like in Consumer Reports) shows these things rarely pay off. Often it's a fight just to file a claim.
