If not one of the above, how do you break in a new bike or rebuilt engine?

I'm not a believer in the easy break-in method. I think that varying the load and rpms is the best method. I usually take it easy for the first 30 minutes and then ride as normal with a few full throttle blasts to redline now and then. Back when bike dealers allowed test rides do you think that anyone took new bike for a spin and stayed below 4000 rpms? Let the big dog eat, XS.

I voted for the run it easy for the first 1000 section. Although when we got the sporty last year we did vary the rpms alot for the first 100 then really just rode it normally. (the mrs. still doesn't understand that the right hand will twist the grip a lot farther than she realizes)!

(the mrs. still doesn't understand that the right hand will twist the grip a lot farther than she realizes)! Sounds like she needs a 1/4 turn throttle.

I guess if you are to keep within the terms and conditions of the warranty you have to abide but what is laid down in the manufacturers guide, if you don't and then get a problem, you only have yourself to blame.

I read an article somewhere on the internet. ;D Anyway, the guy sounded legit. He claimed that a big twin only had a narrow window of opportunity to properly seat the rings. Like the first 200 miles. He was adamant that the rider needed to put some gas pressure on those rings with a bit of heavy throttle, early on. I can't say. I broke both bikes in about the same, the V-Strom burns no oil but the Vulcan uses some. Maybe I should have been a bit harder on the Vulcan during break-in. Many guys I've talked with on the internet have Vulcans and Nomads that consume no oil. YMMV,

I follow what the engineers recommend in the manual and have never had a problem. Beyond I run mobil 1 or amsoil synthetics after the break in period and have had no difficultys or oil use....Don
