Went out Friday afternoon to ride with a friend who is brand new to motorcycling. I had talked him into buying an old used Honda 250 Rebel against the opinion of his other friends who told him to buy a bigger bike. He is happy with the Rebel. I was concerned that, being an older bike he may have some mechanical issues. Turned out it was me who had the issues! We rode from home (North Canton) to Waynesburg before my bike started acting up. Digital speedo quit and then the tach and lights started acting up. I decided we better head for home but it died totally in a few hundred yards.
A very similar event happened a couple years ago and then it turned out to be a stator had burned out. We happened to be at a Marathon service station which has an auto servic garage also. They sell batteries and had the correct one for my bike.
They were very helpful and tested the old battery and said it had a dead short and was shot, so I purchased the new battery which was a reasonable $50. We installed it and they said to give it a half hour for the acid to activate the battery, so we went to McD's
for a sandwich. Bike seemed fine after lunch. We rode another 30-45 minutes to Delroy and stopped for ice cream then went on toward Zoar. By the time we were crossing the Atwood Lake Dam the bike started the same issues. It died at Rt 212 and 800. Totally dead.
Had to get another friend to haul it home.
I will be taking it in tomorrow to find out if the charging system is functioning properly. The last time the stator was changed under a recall and didn't cost me a penny. I think this time it will be expensive.
Tale of woe over.
