Work started last week on the Sportster. That and any house projects seem to have one thing in common...the simplest of things turns in to a real pain. It all started out easy enough. I cleaned up the triple clamps, front tire rim and forks and Mr. VS change the fork oil. Turns out that since we always took good care of our bikes, I never knew how bad old, dirty fork oil smelled...I accused the Mr. of doing something rude in the garage . So on to the break fluid. The first sign of trouble came when we saw the color of the old fluid. It was tan. The dot 5 oil that is SUPPOSED to be in it is purple so the previous owner had put the wrong stuff in it. It turns out that the tan fork oil was not happy when the purple moved into town and trashed the seals in both master cylinders. Just a little chemistry experiment gone bad. So I spent some time today calling around to hopefully find a couple rebuild kits in stock someplace close. I found 3 fronts and no rears...just as good as none of either. Now we are waiting for the part. A rather annoying thing we found with the Harley is the mix of metric and American fasteners on it. If one wrench is too small and you go the next size up, it might be too big because it might be the other measure. Makes you honest about putting tools back in the right place!

I'd bet there a couple of guys at Action that will work on the Harley for beer and burgers. ;D
When I'm working on my bike, I always put my tools where I never can find them....in my back pocket.

Hey VS, Harley, GM, Ford...still using metric/fractional I think its a tool conspiracy. Remember grade school when we were told the USA is swithing to metric. Well I'm still waiting...whata pain

I read somehwere the other day that the US is the only country NOT using metric. Some day the people at the Society of Automotive Engineers will make us all happy.

We finally got the rebuild kits for the master cylinders and the breaks are all done. It was recommended by one of Mr VS's buddies that I test them THOROUGHLY before I ride it...wonder what he means by that? . We also have the primary covers and the gear box cover painted black. I REALLY like that black and chrome look. If I end up keeping the bike long term, I am definitely going to have it powder coated as max power suggested in another thread. My job was mostly just take things MR Vs2up hands to me and either polish it, clean it or paint it. Unfortunately, I don't think the Big O will be ready to go this weekend. I might take the WR out for a spin on the road though (just cuz I have a permit now and I CAN do it). As Shoe requested, here is a picture of Mr VS2up and I "in action" ;D

That is a great photo. If you had a couple of elves in the photo helping, you could use it for your XMas cards. ;D

Is the old story of women just sitting there and moaning while the men do all the work? Yes, but that would be an urban legend. See, that photo had to be STAGED. If it were in the house, I would be the one working and Mr. VS2up would be sitting in a chair with a beer and it would be REAL! The only "real" in that picture is a man only working when he's getting directions from a woman! Disclaimer: Mr. VS is working VERY hard on my bike and I really appreciate his work. But I AM helping as much as I can! BTW, Shoe, the monkeys were at 87's house when that picture was taken. In fact, they are spending so much time there these days, I hardly ever see them. I hope to see them soon....after they get back from Ireland!

Two things spring to mind here, well it's three actually:
firstly what has Roy Orbison got to do with this posting?
Secondly I see no monkey's here in Ireland they all live at your house, according to 87.
Thirdly you have missed the point I was trying to make, methinks it went way over your head?
