The distinctive roar of a Harley's engine is loud, but studies have revealed the biggest source of noise for motorcyclists is actually generated by air whooshing over the riders' helmets. Even at legal speeds, the sound can exceed safe levels. Now, scientists have identified a key source of the rushing din. Researchers from the University of Bath and Bath Spa University placed motorcycles helmets atop mannequin heads, mounted them in a wind tunnel, and turned on the fans. By placing microphones at different locations around the helmet and at the mannequin's ear, the researchers found that an area underneath the helmet and near the chin bar is a significant source of the noise that reaches riders' sensitive eardrums. The team also investigated how helmet angle and wind speed affected the loudness. Future tests will move beyond the wind tunnel to real-life riders on the open road. The findings, described in the Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, may one day be used to design quieter helmets, saving riders' ears for the enjoyment of hard biker rock, the researchers say.
Has anyone tried a chin curtain similar to one of these? www.jafrum.com/Shop-By-Brand/HJC-Helmet-Shields-Accessories/HJC-Helmets-HJC-IS-Max-IS-Max-BT-Helmet-Chin-Curtain?gclid=CPOs8c3Fr6oCFUPBKgodPxOD8gI am interested to get one if anyone can offer me an experienced opinion that they actually help cut down noise. No experience Dave, but I do know there is a big difference in wind noise between my Shoei and the Nolan Modular. The Shoei wins hands down. Helmet design is everything.

Our full face helmets are HJC CL-15 (hers) and CL-16 (mine). They look the same but the CL-15 was the previous year's version. (got it 1/2 price from Motorcycle Superstore last year, but I digress)
With the visors up there is not much wind noise. With the visors down, however, LOTS a noise. Really annoying. Luckily the Goldwing has a large windshield so I just leave the visor up unless it's raining or we're in an area with lots of bugs. I installed J&M headsets and microphones in both over the winter, but the wind noise is still pretty bad.
The helmets are comfortable and the price was right ($129 and $69), but I doubt I'll buy this model again.
On the Harley, I either wear ear plugs or ear buds for the Ipod so noise isn't a big problem with full face or 3/4 helmets.

I've used a chin curtain with my HJC AC12 and didn't notice much difference in the noise level.

Gearman, thanks for the practical advice. I will think twice about investing in a chin curtain. Probably more annoyance than anything.
