We have had this discussion before, but the question remains...would you buy and ride a scooter if gas prices get as high as....say $5.00 per gallon ?
If gas prices get up to $5.00 or more per gallon, we might be forced to cut back our transportation costs of driving to work so we can afford to ride motorcycles on weekends.
No lynch mobs... please !! ;D

I get about the same gas mileage in both my car and my motorcycle. You'd still have to cough up money for a new "vehicle"!

Yep ,sure would. I wouldn't care what others think. After all I'm old people expect that from me.

No.No real reason to look for a scooter, the KLR gets 54 mpg,so I'll just stick with that.Besides, most of my commutes are around 35 miles one way so I don't know if I would want to be doing that on a small scouter.I don't know how much better a large scouter would do over the KLR's mpg. Also, living in S.E.O. most of the roads I commute on are like a lot of peoples weekend ride.

I have no problem riding a scooter. However, I have a 90 mile daily roundtrip commute on the slab, so scooter commuting is really out of the question.
Mrs Wahoo would like one to putt around town on weekends and all summer when she's out of school.

Since my Rocket III Touring only gets 35-36 mpg, that could become a problem when gasoline gets over $4.00 per gallon, maybe $4.50. But then again it gets better mileage than my 2006 Chevy Colorado Extended Cab which only gets around 20 mpg. I don't know if I'll go scooter or not as there are lots of midsize motorcycles around 650cc that get 55-60 mpg. Examples would be a Wee Strom or a Versys or similar bike.

I hate to say it,but I would be happy with 20 mpg,my F250 gets 13 mpg.
My KLR averages 54 mpg,but if I had it to do again I would consider the Wee Strom and Versys also. That big thumper is pretty slow coming off the line.I've heard/read a lot of good stuff on both the Wee and the Verseys.

How much in gas would you have to save to pay for a $2000 to $5000 scooter (no china bikes included), it's additional insurance, maintenance and plates? TGorman wanted me to buy a more economical vehicle, calculated it would take about 10 years to break even, just about in time to start all over. If you're that desperate, ride a bicycle to the stores and to McDonalds for your Sr. Coffee's ;D

I rode a rental scooter in Bermuda and had a blast on it,only ran about 50 kph. I thought about getting one for around here, scooter shop just down the street but it wouldn't be to save money on gas,pay back would take ten years as XS said, they are fun. Traffic circles were a bit spookey in Bermuda since I was on the wrong side of the road, lost and they were pretty new to me. www.youtube.com/watch?v=iAgX6qlJEMc

NO WAY - I ride too much so when it gets to $5 - I will stop riding as much as I do...
No return on a scooter investment cause there would be none. I'll continue to ride my (paid for) Gold Wing.

I want to get a silverwing scooter (to go with the goldwing) in the worst way as they are a hoot to ride and it would be a good way for the wife to fall in love with riding and get her own bike.
As far as commuting, it would scare me to death going in rush hour traffic on one! I don't like riding the big bike or my truck for that matter during it.
Unfortunately gas prices are what they are and will not change what or how I drive. I will just have to get used to paying more. Thankfully we work out of the house and do not commute to much.

No, No, No, I hate Scooters. Petrol is now €1.51 a litre here, that's over €6.00 a gallon, we are currently getting $1.38 for €1.00 so that works out at over $8.00 a gallon in your money, you guys have always been spoiled with low petrol prices, we have been conditioned to live with petrol prices at that level. So if we can pay that for a gallon of petrol and keep away from scooters, also run a car, maybe you should consider buying a European made car like a Volks or an Audi to get better gas mileage than you currently get. Then you would not have to consider riding a scooter.
