I went down to N.C. to pick up a wrecked FJR this weekend and on the way home I thought I'd get off of the interstate and do some road scouting. In Stauton VA I got on US 250 heading to Elkins W.V.,I've ridden 250 in W.V. so I had an idea what it would be like...a twisty mountain road.Boy is that an understatement! The Virginia section of 250 puts the W.V. section to shame,it's loaded with switchbacks, continueous curves, and great mountain views.Of course the leaves are off right now,so there may be fewer views once it warms up.
Another thing that makes the Virginia section better is the great pavement,it looks like it was probably paved last year.
If you're heading over to do the Blue Ridge Parkway this would make a great sidetrip.I know I'll be heading back over there this summer, and this time it won't be in the truck!
Another great road in that area is US60 from Buena Vista to Amherst.

You must have passed this place: www.thebuckhorninn.com/I had a beautiful Easter dinner there years ago. Virginia roads are always in excellent shape and when they do make repairs they have the ability to pave and not make a hole into a bump!!! Spring comes early in the Shenandoah valley.

Thanks. Good to know. I may head down that way in late May or June.

Rode the whole length from New Philly to Staunton about 20 years ago this coming weekend. The ride down was in the rain with many near misses with accidents and not making wet switch backs but the ride back was nice. So nice in fact that I got motion sickness from riding too aggressively and had to slow down before I filled my helmet with my lunch.
I rode the Transalp down and, that was my 1st multi day trip by motorcycle.

The current issue of Rider has a good article on the roads in the Virginia,West Virginia border area. The route includes US250 as well as 220,219,Smoke Hole road and quite a few others,it looks like a very good route. It would make a great weekend camping/riding trip.
The article was written and photographed by Lance Oliver,an Ohio rider that lives in Mount Vernon.

I'm glad I live in this part of the USA, we have some really good riding close to us. I've ridden part of 250 in the past, there's not a boring stretch on that road.
