I was on an XS650 forum to which I belong, and the guys were talking about the old "hit and miss" gasoline engines that were used on Matag washing machines before electric washing machines were introduced to the rural areas. The engines were nothing more that slave engines and very rarely ran above an idle. Anyway, when I was a kid back in the 1950s, a buddy and myself tried to fit one of these hit and miss engines on a home made mini bike. The end result was a mini bike that was slower than you could walk. We were 12 and 13 years old and didn't understand the principle of hit and miss. I think dumb and dumber is a good description of us at that age.
