Ride Ohio doesn't normally get involved with non motorcycle related topics in our polls, but the oil spill in the Gulf is of historic proportions. Should the management of BP be brought up on criminal charges for the disaster in the Gulf, or is our need for oil worth the consequences of a major disaster and no criminal charges should be levied.
Keep in mind, clean up is BP's responsibility no matter what.

I couldn't vote in the poll....but
Criminal prosecutions of corporations don't really have the same impact as does prosecuting individuals. The only penalties that can be imposed are fines because you can't put a corporation in prison. It's more of a symbolic move than a practical one. A civil court action can impose fines, clean up costs and punitive damages, and order / monitor clean up activities, and then throw the head honchos in jail for contempt if they don't comply.
The most frustrating part of this is the slowness with which BP has reacted to try to stop the flow of oil. I heard one expert on NPR state that the government should put BP America into an involuntary receivership, and force the action now rather than at the snail's pace at which BP is moving. Interesting concept. The theory was that the government for all practical purposes took over GM and ousted the President of the company, so why not do the same thing to BP America. ?
I just hope they get the darn well plugged soon so they can start the process of sucking up the oil with those ships from Norway or where ever they came from....

How can you prosecute for something that was an accident? I also heard that this cap was the first thing that BP wanted to do. But our govt. said to try the other things first. so should we prosecute the feds for prolonging the leak? there are so many questions to be answered. I will take so long to get all the information. This oil was not scheduled for production yet. Otherwise we would have$5.00 or higher gas prices now. I am truck driver by trade & I haul gasoline for a living & all of this is my own opinion. & we all know about opinions everyone has one &we may or may not agree with.
