They gotta be in it for the fame and glory, no amount of money would make me try those stunts. An over inflated ego is a powerful thing sometimes...and a dangerous thing other times.

You left out selections like – “because they can” – “I wish I had the balls”
I didn’t get to see the whole episode they aired as I was on the road driving home and missed it. But I did get to see the replay of the Jumps in Paris and I was in one way jealous and in another entertained.
Any one with any hint of competitiveness will see how far they are willing to push the envelope whether it is speed, distance, heights or precision. It is up to you to determine how far you are willing go with it. If the only skid marks you’ve ever made are in your shorts, you’d never understand.;D
With out people willing to push the limits we wouldn’t have cool bikes like the RC51, Hyabusa or my ultra cool 950 Adv. These people are just pushing the limits in a direction uncomfortable to most. The next time you buy one of those over priced energy drinks, you’ll be helping support these guys and keeping me entertained.
Fame? Ski jumping and downhill skiing are probably just as dangerous or even more and look how little exposure they get unless it is during the Olympics or the “agony of defeat”. Their fame is in an arena that is nothing more than a fish turd in the ocean compared to movie people and the ball sports people that are over rated and over courted by the general public and the media. If you need proof, read the newspaper where whole sections are dedicated to ball sports and entertainment. Find me two positive articles on motorcycles in the newspapers in one month and I will be shocked. We’d be lucky if there were two in a year!
Blood thirsty? You haven’t been watching cage fighting then?
If you think those guys are crazy? You should watch one of the free ride videos from the mountainbike community. These guys do the same stuff but with only a shirt, shorts and helmet.
Confession…
Why? Because the jump onto the roof top and the jump off are two styles of jumps I really enjoyed doing but in strip mines and on a much smaller scale. Jumping up onto something is fun and the landing soft unless you jump too high.
Jumping off hills or ledges that have a rounded is a roller coaster type thrill done without the bars and seat belts that keep you secured in your seat. Scary? you don't see the landing untill you have already committed.
I won’t even get into my Dover Dam dream. If you looked at his landing ramp, you’ll get an idea…

This gets me thinking...Ok everyone stand back. I had to fly to Utah this week to provide a service for a customer. I had a window seat on the flight back. It was a crystal clear day. As we flew over the mountains the lady in the seat next to me mentioned how amazing it was that the people back then had the moxie to make it that far. I mentioned that I bet today there were very few people living in our nanny state that would have the guts to even think about trying to make that trip, let alone do it. We need more people that live their lives doing things instead of thinking how much danger is involved. Just think about what this means. As an example lets pretend that the motorcycle has not been invented. You come up with the idea of making a 2 wheeled , completely open machine with a power to weight ratio just short of a dragster. You go to the bank to get some funding to start production. They ask," What safety features it has?" You tell them,"Well, the main safety feature is the skill of the rider." They say, "Lets run it by our legal staff." What do you think the answer is going to be? "No way in h*ll!!!",is their response. We can all think of many things that you could substitute for the motorcycle. So anyway I feel strongly we need more people that are doing the stuff that might seem dangerous. If you were to let people know that we were asking for volunteers for a flight to Mars, but there was a real 25% chance of not making it back. There would be tons of people lining up to take on the challenge. But, there would be even more people telling us that it was too dangerous for anyone to even try. The Apollo astronauts knew that there was good chance of not getting back, but they knew the risk was well worth it. So anyway, this is more than just about guys jumping stuff on bikes, it's about our attitude to challenge. Where are we going to go if no one is willing to make the jump. So that is my thought for the day. I need to go take a nap now.

Jeffe,
We were just talking about the pioneers when I was signing in at Action Extreme Sports when I went trail riding this morning.
Just tell people to read the story about Donner Pass.
