Usually not, but it depends on the ride. If we are going dual or adventure sporting off in the back woods, yes. There has been a couple times we ran across some folks that weren't too pleased that we were getting a bit too close to whatever it was they were doing (Pot farm? meth lab?) that far back in the woods. We stick to county roads that are no longer maintained, but public never the less so it's not like we are trespassing. We didn't think that we should point that out and thankfully, both times, they realized we weren't looking for trouble and let us leave without any problems. There is also potential af running across a mean o'l critter of some sort if we primative camp (plus, it could be dinner too ). I also plan to carry if I ever ride any distance on the bike alone. Of course with the martial arts training I have, I always have my hands...they're lethal weapons (LOL).

Bob, I am just curious about carrying protection while riding, especially if the rider camps in remote areas. There are some crazy people out there. A friend of mine always carries a 25 cal. semi auto in his pocket which could have caused him a lot of problems. He rode into a neighboring state that required a helmet and got ticketed for no helmet. They didn't find the hand gun or he would have been in big trouble. I understand and in that case I would be packing also!

The story about the .25 caliber pistol brings to mind something I read in a gun magazine years ago. A women wrote in wanting to know the best way to use a cheap .25 pistol she had bought for self defense. I have never forgotten the answer," tie a long stout cord through the trigger guard and swing it around your head" :-) :-) . having seen the results of pistol qualification in the army I thought it was good advice.
