The recent post about the motorcyclist getting shot by a protective father stirred up some interest in me. Not that it makes any difference to me, but I am curious as to how many of us keep firearms. This might be a delicate subject to some members, so you can vote without leaving a comment or not vote at all. The poll does not tell everyone how you vote, only that you have voted.

I didn't vote because I wish there had been more choices. "Firerarms" covers everything from Exotic Shotguns and Rifles to $59 25 cal. automatic pistols that are good for 1 thing only. I do believe that if We stopped making and importing guns Today there would still be 5 guns in this country for every Man, Woman, and Child so I think "Outlawing" guns is pointless. Better owner Education and strict enforcement of laws already on the books would help a lot.
Ironic fact: There are a Few firearms out there somewhere that were originally registered to Me. The One I currently own is over 30 Years Old and is Not Registered.

I grew up with firearms in the house and had my own .22 rifle at the age of 10 and a shotgun by the time I was 14. My father and grandfather instilled in me a tremendous amount of respect for the power that they contain. We had guns hanging on the wall and never thought too much about them. I never took them down for anything except for the correct uses. Never to show off for friends. I think with them being around made me not think of them as the "forbidden" fruit that tempts so many.
Today I have a couple of shotguns and a couple of rifles and spend many hours in the woods and fields enjoying the outdoors. I may never get a shot off. However, ya know what? It don't matter. I've spent quality time with my sons and wife and solved a lot of the worlds problems with my father and grandfather. Great times that I will never forget.
Back to the subject at hand. I believe that one of the reasons that the United States have lasted this long is the fact of private gun ownership. Imagine the problems involved for a foreign army to have to deal with all of the private owners that would be out to get them.
Just my thoughts. 87

A gun is a tool. Just like a hammer or a saw. And like a hammer and saw, it's only as safe as the person controling it. They are simply a tool.

I grew up hunting pheasant, grouse and rabbit along with running a trap line from the age of 12. I still have the 12ga shotgun and 22 rifle that I used back then. I also keep a couple of shotguns just for protection, I'm a firm believer that we have the right to protect ourselves. I have taught my wife and daughter how to shoot and handle firearms safely. Owning firearms is not something to be taken lightly, if you are going to own one, you owe it to your family and yourself to know how to use it safely and give it due respect.

Might I add that I spent many years in the field with my trusty bird dog hunting pheasant and grouse with no accidents or gun related problems.
Hunting with a good bird dog that you have trained yourself can be compared to riding a motorcycle that you have restored, both are more rewarding than words can describe.

Not a problem over here as we just don't have them, It's like everything else in the right hands it poses no threat as the owner is a responsible adult. Unfortunately firearms are so readily available in America that the law of averages states that sooner or later a moron will own one!

I too own a 45 and a hunting rifle and have been around unlocked guns from a very young age. My friend and I often laugh about our slumber parties with plenty of unlocked hunting rifles in full view. We never even thought of messing with them since we were taught enough respect to leave them alone unless with an adult and so were all the other girls at the party.
All kidding aside, there are morons who drive and kill somebody and ones who do it with guns. In both cases, it can be done by accident, purpose or just pure stupidity. The only difference is the weapon.

I can see that the subject of firearms is almost as hot of a topic as helmet use and helmet laws. Maybe more so.

I too grew up with fire arms, with out problems,we were taught to respect them.I think maybe Switzerland has the right idea .From what I heard all men of military age were required to have and train with a fire arm.Seems to keep invaders away.
