We made a lot of progress on the bike this weekend. The wiring and controls are almost finished. Then we will install the seat, gas tank, and front fender. The engine needs one new gasket and 2 seals before installation.

I ran into a couple of small snags with the hand controls. The Harley mirrors come as a universal kit with different bushings. I used the kit hardware last year on my bike and it rusted in 2 months. This time I made single spacers out of stainless steel The brake and clutch lever bushing are worn out so I had to make new brass bushing for the levers. Notice the wear on the original brass bushing. These minor issues can really eat up a lot of time on a restoration. It is a good thing that I have a few DREMEL Tools. ;D

I tried to install the front brake cable today and discovered that we do not have a lower adjuster. It is 60 miles round trip to Fremont and they may not have what I need. Time to head to the shop and get creative. Here is what I am starting with - 6mm stainless steel bolts and nuts. Screw the nuts and bolts together keeping the flats aligned. Carefully TIG weld the parts together. Sand the welds down while maintaining the correct dimensions for the wrench to fit the heads. Put a part in the lathe and face off the numbers, center drill, ream, counterbore, and deburr. Test fit cable before taking the part out of the lathe. AAAHHHH - Nice fit It took me 45 minutes to make 2 parts - and people wonder why restored bikes are so expensive.

Actually I am thinking about a scratch built bike. I am getting my thoughts together to build a 1/4 to 1/3 scale V-Rod Destroyer. Use a 18HP Vanguard engine that is modified for a Cushman - big cam, pipes, ported, etc. with a torque converter set-up for a Jr. Dragster. I would like to ride it down the strip one time to see its capabilities. Then ride it in the parades - lock up the front brake and smoke up the streets. ;D The way to transport it would be on the X-90 trailer behind the Ultra, we would just have to remove the wheelie bars.

The hardest part to fabricate is the gas tank.
