it never rains but it pours !! originaly thought the oil leak was from the tacho seal , sorted that , but still leaking oil onto the exhaust ... the front camshaft rubber was wet , thought the front right cylinder head cover screw must be loose , and it was , the bolt was fine but the threads were gone ... on further investigation it looks like someone smacked the cylinder head and bodged it with plastic metal . i've had the bike 3 years and hadn't noticed ... aaarrrrrghhhh !!
i could drill right through but think it best to change the cylinder head ??

Since it is to the out side you might be able to get a heli Coil or Thread insert in there , I think it is 6mm and you can buy kits to do this ,, You will need to remove the gas tank if you already have not .. You should start using Three Bond Sealer and not the Red stuff ,, Three bond is the best I have ever seen Really, Installing a new head will be lots of work .. How about a shorter bolt ? Not Much there ,, You could have it welded up a bit so you have more metal to work with and more room for the bolt/threads .. I am not sure you can get the head off with out removing the engine ?? ,,, anyway Luck , Shoe

thanks shoe ! thankfully i can take the whole cylinder head off still with the engine in the frame ... and whilst there are possible remedies , i figure one bodge is enough ! just as well i imported a nos cylinder head from canada a while ago ! looking at it another way , the new head is just sat on the shelf gathering dust .. i figure this would be a good time to use it , and to do it once , but do it right ??

on reflection it looks like the engine will have to come out to sort the cylinder head after all !!

Peter - I did a top end overhaul with my engine still in the frame. I removed the head and cylinders. What are you having trouble with?

cheers bruce ! nice to know i shouldn't have to take the engine out ... the problem is removing the plugs to get to the inner 4 cylinder head bolts , i've got the b1 in the workshop for a cylinder head change , and the b3 to be re-torqued ... thought i'd give the b3 a try first , but the plugs are tight and will need a special hammer tool , thankfully kwakanaka made one so that might help ... only on the b3 i set the torque wrench to 41 NM , about 30 lb/ft and the 4 outer bolts were rather slack . i think i'll give it a go with the b3 first , if tightening the outer bolts works that is ??
